Apple Enhances Digital Wallet Capabilities
With iOS 27’s upcoming Wallet update, Apple is addressing one of its last unmet needs—handling unsupported passes and tickets.
Bloomberg reports that users will soon be able to digitize QR codes from various sources through the “Create a Pass” function or by taking pictures. This feature introduces templates for memberships, events, and general passes, including gift cards.
This move aims to further integrate digital prepaid products into everyday use but may face resistance among consumers in self-provisioning.
According to Jordan Hirschfield from Javelin Strategy & Research, nearly half of U.S. consumers prefer digitizing gift cards for convenience and security reasons. However, less than 30% might consistently use these digital cards due to immediate redemption tendencies.
Digitization Benefits
Despite skepticism, there are clear advantages in converting physical gift cards into a digital format. Digital versions reduce the risk of loss or theft, and improve user convenience.
The shift towards stored-value accounts indicates a significant evolution in prepaid products, enhancing customer loyalty through rewards and incentives while providing merchants with recurring purchase opportunities.
Apple’s Ecosystem Success
By embracing digitization, Apple aligns itself with the trend of creating an immersive ecosystem that retains users. This parallels the strategy behind the success of stored-value accounts, which encourage repeated engagement by offering rewards and incentives.
