American Express Embraces AI-Powered Transactions

American Express is pioneering a new approach by enabling purchases through registered AI agents on behalf of cardholders.

To support this development, Amex has introduced the Agentic Commerce Experiences (ACE) developer kit. This tool is designed to facilitate seamless transactions for verified AI agents within its closed-loop network.

Cardmembers can now authorize specific AI agents to complete purchases using their cards. The system ensures that only approved agents can transact and leverages what Amex calls Intent Intelligence to verify the user’s intended actions during a transaction.

Brian Riley, Director of Credit at Javelin Strategy & Research, commented on this initiative: “American Express’ strategy is a smart move towards embracing agentic AI. It streamlines integration for developers and simplifies access for independent agents, similar to successful strategies in business cards and rewards programs. This should help American Express maintain its competitive edge.”

User-Friendly Design

American Express aims to make the experience user-friendly with the Amex mobile app.

According to Luke Gebb, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Innovation at American Express, the app will provide transparency into where account credentials are stored. “When multiple agents have made requests on your behalf,” Gebb noted, “the app ensures you can match purchases back to their intents for easy tracking and dispute resolution if necessary.”

Addressing Concerns and Offering Protection

American Express acknowledges potential concerns from consumers regarding AI-enabled transactions.

The company plans to implement Agent Purchase Protection as part of the ACE initiative. While details are still being finalized, this protection mechanism is intended to address any disputes that may arise when an AI agent makes an error during a purchase.
