Persona, a leading global provider of identity infrastructure, has partnered with ConnectID, an Australian digital identity network, to facilitate age verification for Australian users. This integration aims to ensure compliance with Australia’s under-16 social media legislation while safeguarding sensitive personal data.

By leveraging this new partnership, businesses can adhere to the stringent privacy requirements set forth by the Australian government without compromising user data. The integration enables age verification through existing enrollment information stored within users’ financial institutions, ensuring that no identity documents like passports or driver’s licenses are shared with the requesting platform.

Verification results, such as confirming a user’s age being over 16 or 18, are then transmitted to relevant businesses. Notably, the verification process does not involve the transfer of any personal information beyond what is necessary for age confirmation. This means that names, dates of birth, and other sensitive details remain securely within financial institutions.

Privacy-focused approach

Neither Persona nor ConnectID processes or stores any personally identifiable information during the verification process. Instead, authentication is conducted via users’ banking app interfaces, acting as a secure bridge between banks and requesting platforms. This method significantly reduces privacy risks associated with data oversharing and mitigates operational costs for businesses involved in storing identity documents.

Both Persona and ConnectID participated in the 2025 Australian Age Assurance Technology Trial. Their involvement highlighted their advanced technology readiness levels, positioning them as key players in meeting local age verification standards with privacy-first methodologies.

Commenting on this development, Daniel Lee, Product Manager at Persona, stated that this integration will enable partners to comply with stringent Australian regulations while maintaining user privacy. Rick Iversen, Head of ConnectID, emphasized that the solution allows organizations to meet new legal obligations related to age assurance in a way that keeps sensitive personal data entirely protected.
