Coinbase has recently introduced stock and ETF trading to its platform, making it accessible to all US users. This feature enables customers to buy, sell, and manage their equities alongside cryptocurrency holdings in one cohesive account.

The service is offered without any commissions and operates continuously for 24 hours a day, five days a week. Fractional shares can be purchased starting from USD 1, providing flexibility in trading options. Users can fund their trades using both US dollars (USD) and USD Coin (USDC). Additionally, Coinbase One members receive rewards based on their USDC trading balance.

This move comes after an initial period of limited availability, now officially opening up the service to all US-based Coinbase users. Stock trading is facilitated through a partnership with Apex Fintech Solutions, covering clearing, custody, and execution services.

Expanded Trading Hours and Tokenized Stocks

Coinbase plans to gradually extend 24/5 trading hours to a wider range of equities in the coming months. The company intends to introduce stock perpetuals for non-US users starting this spring, offering a more flexible way to invest in US markets around the clock. In the future, Coinbase aims to launch tokenized stocks, which would allow global trading at any time, use equity holdings as on-chain collateral, and make payments linked to stock value; however, no specific timeline has been set for these developments.

Partnership with Yahoo Finance

Coinbase has teamed up with Yahoo Finance, a platform boasting over 150 million global monthly visitors. This collaboration allows users to seamlessly transition from researching assets on Yahoo Finance directly into executing trades on Coinbase. Yahoo Finance will integrate real-time data from Coinbase, enhancing asset discovery and monitoring capabilities across both traditional stocks and cryptocurrencies. Users accessing the service via Yahoo Finance will benefit from a free trial of Coinbase One Basic for one month.

The introduction of stock trading aligns with Coinbase’s broader strategy of creating an ‘Everything Exchange,’ aiming to blur the lines between different asset classes and unify the management of traditional and digital investments on a single platform.
