Visa Upgrades Tools for Managing Merchant Payments Processes

Consumers today have numerous payment options at their disposal, ranging from digital wallets to cryptocurrencies and real-time payment systems. As a result, merchants are increasingly expected to support these diverse methods. This shift puts new demands on merchant acquirers, the financial institutions responsible for processing transactions.

Introducing Visa’s Intelligent Authorization Platform

To meet these challenges, Visa is launching its Intelligent Authorization platform in the Asia-Pacific region. Designed as a single-API pathway, this platform enables acquirers to handle transactions through card networks’ infrastructure. This approach can eliminate the need for banks to build their own dedicated systems and offers operational efficiencies.

The Evolution of Merchant Connectivity

This is an extension of Visa’s efforts with the Visa Acceptance Solutions platform,” said Don Apgar, Director of Merchant Payments at Javelin Strategy & Research. Historically, Visa relied on acquirers to connect their networks via banks’ technology stacks or third-party processors like Fiserv or WorldPay.

Now, Visa provides merchant-level network connectivity for acquirers of all sizes,” Apgar noted, highlighting the competitive processing offerings that can be introduced into the market more easily.

The Role of Payments Orchestration Platforms

The proliferation of payments orchestration platforms is due in part to banks not being originally designed to handle transactions through modern technologies such as mobile wallets or stablecoin platforms. These platforms also offer intelligent routing, enabling them to determine the optimal payment rail for a transaction based on factors like speed and cost, with the ability to switch dynamically.

This flexibility can significantly reduce transaction declines while saving both merchants and acquirers time and money.

The Impact of Artificial Intelligence

AI’s role in payments orchestration is growing, allowing real-time routing decisions without predefined parameters. As financial institutions assess infrastructure strategies for AI-driven transactions, streamlined payments orchestration becomes a critical factor.

This development could accelerate the growth of agentic commerce, making it essential for acquirers to consider efficient and dynamic payment solutions.
