Visa has introduced Intelligent Authorization, a feature on the Visa Acceptance Platform aimed at helping acquirers modernize their payment processing via a single API.

This new capability is designed to benefit acquirers such as banks and financial institutions that handle payments for merchants. By integrating through this single API, they can streamline their processes while enhancing the efficiency of transaction handling.

The existing payment infrastructure often faces challenges due to its legacy nature—built for a time when transaction volumes were lower and data formats simpler. This setup struggles with the complexities of modern digital commerce, leading to issues like increased false declines, higher operational costs, and difficulties in supporting newer payment methods.

Unified Integration for Multiple Networks

Visa Intelligent Authorization was developed to allow transactions to be processed across major card networks through a single integration point. This approach eliminates the need for costly infrastructure rebuilds, simplifying the operational framework. The system relies on machine learning algorithms that analyze transaction data in real time, optimizing routing decisions based on network rules, industry programs, and regional regulations.

Moreover, it includes a centralized management portal with an analytics dashboard to facilitate oversight, settlement, and regulatory compliance. It also provides instant risk alerts, making it versatile enough to serve as the primary processor for acquirers or as a supplementary tool to enhance existing capabilities.

As payment flows become more diverse and data-intensive, Visa is responding with this new solution. Digital wallets, stablecoins, and emerging transaction models like agentic commerce—where AI executes purchases on behalf of consumers—are placing greater demands on authorization systems. These require the ability to process larger volumes of complex data in real time.

Research by YouGov, commissioned by Visa, shows that 74% of Asia Pacific consumers already use AI-driven tools during their shopping journeys. This underscores the increasing complexity and speed of payment interactions, highlighting the need for modern solutions to address these challenges.

Visa Intelligent Authorization is now available to selected acquirers as part of the Visa Acceptance Platform. The company remains committed to meeting the evolving needs of its clients while ensuring compliance with industry regulations and laws.
