Visa Direct has made an announcement regarding its collaboration with UnionPay International, aiming to facilitate real-time cross-border payments for Chinese Mainland cardholders.

This partnership intends to integrate Visa Direct’s network into UnionPay International’s (UPI) MoneyExpress platform. Upon completion, this integration will offer secure and efficient cross-border remittances and business-to-consumer payouts to more than 95% of Chinese Mainland UnionPay International debit cardholders through a single connection.

Targeting a significant remittance route

According to the official press release, the collaboration focuses on the Chinese Mainland as one of the world’s largest remittance destinations. The service is designed to provide a unified channel for both consumers and businesses worldwide to transfer funds into this region.

This integration is crafted to support various cross-border applications such as payments to creators and freelancers, contractor disbursements, reimbursements, and family remittances. Company officials stated that the system aims to function securely at scale with real-time delivery capabilities. Cross-border remittances are identified as a crucial part of Visa Direct’s international strategy, aligning with global digital trends in cross-border payments. Additionally, the service is anticipated to decrease costs and enhance efficiency for those transferring money to Chinese Mainland, while also supporting partners across multiple markets.

Timeline for rollout

The enhanced Visa Direct connection with UnionPay International will be available to customers and clients in the first half of 2026. This partnership is part of Visa Direct’s ongoing expansion into key global markets, focusing on improving liquidity and transaction delivery speed.

Both companies will continue to address evolving market demands while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and industry laws.
