Thunes has introduced real-time cross-border payments to and from Colombia through Bre-B, the country’s national instant payment system.
This move underscores Thunes’ dedication to supporting Real-Time Payments (RTP) systems worldwide and enhancing financial inclusion via interoperable and cost-effective money transfers. By integrating Bre-B functionalities into its Direct Global Network, Thunes assists central banks and regulatory bodies in modernizing national payment infrastructures and expanding the availability of financial services.
Instant Payment Facilitation for Colombia
Bre-B enables users, both businesses and individuals, to send and receive funds instantaneously between diverse bank accounts, cooperatives, digital wallets, and fintech platforms. By October 2025, this service is anticipated to be utilized by 76% of Colombia’s adult population.
Focusing on real-time cross-border capabilities within and beyond Colombia, Thunes aims to boost transaction speed and accessibility for its Direct Global Network members and their end users. The company seeks to establish secure real-time payment systems that facilitate rapid money movement.
Thunes expressed optimism about central banks’ efforts, such as those in Colombia, to foster more inclusive and interoperable financial systems. In partnership with Bre-B, Thunes contributes to the country’s role in driving the global real-time economy and optimizing cross-border payments in the region. This collaboration illustrates how public-private innovation can drive significant financial advancements.
Even though 78% of transactions in Colombia remain cash-based, the country’s financial landscape is undergoing rapid digital transformation, thanks to high rates of bank account penetration (92%) and mobile wallet adoption, coupled with the launch of Bre-B.
