Thunes has introduced a direct-to-workforce cross-border payment system that allows businesses to quickly remit payments to remote, freelance, and gig workers in 140 countries.
This service enables the instantaneous transfer of funds into bank accounts, mobile wallets, or stablecoin wallets, reaching an estimated 12 billion endpoints globally on a continuous 24/7 basis.
By leveraging a single API interface, Thunes helps firms circumvent the necessity of managing multiple payment providers and complex technical integrations. By directly connecting companies to local payment systems, it offers an integrated alternative to fragmented payout arrangements.
Stablecoin integration and FX volatility
A key feature of the service is its ability to pay workers in stablecoins, which is particularly beneficial in regions where local currency fluctuations can diminish the value of earned income. This addresses a critical challenge faced by remote workers in high-volatility economies.
According to Thunes, 90% of gig workers prioritize the prompt access to funds as a crucial factor when choosing a payout system. The solution is designed to meet this demand through immediate payment delivery tailored to individual needs.
Usage across various industries
Thunes reports that its service is currently utilized by diverse sectors, including international payroll processing, gig economy disbursements, e-commerce refunds, insurance claims payments, and operations for NGOs in markets with limited financial infrastructure.
Global payroll provider Ontop is one of the companies already employing this service. An Ontop official highlighted that managing global payroll for a dispersed workforce had grown more complicated, especially as demand for stablecoin-based payout options increased. They view Thunes’ integration as an essential tool to ensure timely and diverse payment methods.
This launch signifies larger trends in global employment organization. The growth of platform-based work and cross-border freelancing has heightened the need for real-time, multi-currency disbursement systems. However, traditional correspondent banking networks and multiple-payment-provider setups have often failed to meet these expectations.
For payments and fintech companies, the Thunes solution stands out due to its streamlined API architecture. It eliminates the need for businesses to establish or manage separate integrations for various regions or wallet types, thereby reducing operational costs while enhancing payout coverage in underserved markets through local network access.
