UK-based business management platform, Tide, has introduced a groundbreaking change in its card design by eliminating all printed numbers, including the card number, expiry code, and security code.

This new approach is intended to minimize exposure to various forms of card fraud, particularly when cards are lost, stolen, intercepted, or exposed to shoulder surfing. By removing the visible card details, Tide aims to enhance security for its users in both online and offline scenarios.

Addressing CNP Fraud

Card-not-present (CNP) fraud has reached unprecedented levels in the UK. According to data from UK finance, losses associated with this type of fraud amounted to nearly GBP 400 million in 2024, a significant 11% increase from the previous year. Additionally, other forms of printed card detail-related fraud, such as card ID theft and counterfeit cards, collectively cost businesses an additional GBP 65 million.

Tide is now leading the charge by becoming the first UK business to introduce numberless cards in collaboration with Mastercard. This initiative aligns with a broader commitment from Mastercard to phase out manual card entry across Europe by 2030, focusing on safer and more convenient payment methods like tokenized transactions.

By reducing the necessity for re-issuing cards, Tide has also extended their card lifespan from three years to four. This move is part of a larger effort to decrease plastic waste while enhancing security measures for businesses.
