Programmable financial services company Stripe has announced support for a new feature called Copilot Checkout.
Integration with Microsoft
Microsoft Copilot users in the United States will soon have the ability to purchase items from Etsy merchants and retailers like Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie without leaving their chat session.
This development follows Stripe’s long-standing relationship with Microsoft, which began in 2022. At that time, Microsoft started using Stripe for payments and later adopted Stripe Connect for payment acceptance and identity verification in its marketplace initiatives.
How it Works
Copilot conversations leading to a shopping experience will now feature Stripe-enabled checkouts within the chat interface. This process involves communication between Copilot and Stripe via an integration, followed by connection with the seller through the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard for agentic commerce jointly developed by Stripe.
After receiving payment credentials from the buyer, Stripe issues a Shared Payment Token to protect the buyer’s information. The token is then transferred to the seller, allowing them to process transactions either via Stripe or another payment provider while still benefiting from Stripe’s risk signals for fraud protection and maintaining control over merchant data.
To streamline onboarding for more merchants, Microsoft plans to work with Stripe to integrate the Agentic Commerce Suite, a solution that helps businesses make their products accessible to AI agents and manages checkout, fraud protection, and payments through one integration point.
Stripe’s Focus on AI
Beyond its partnership with Microsoft, Stripe has also joined forces with Mirakl to enable merchants’ participation in the emerging agentic commerce economy. This collaboration aims to grant Mirakl access to Stripe’s connections with AI platforms such as OpenAI, allowing secure entry into agentic shopping channels for merchants and businesses.
Previously, Stripe partnered with OpenAI to launch Instant Checkout within ChatGPT, enabling users across the US to purchase goods from Etsy sellers directly in their chat sessions. This move was part of a plan to include over one million Shopify merchants such as Glossier, Vuori, Spanx, and SKIMS.
