Shopify has recently introduced Agentic Storefronts, a feature within the Shopify Admin that provides merchants with immediate access to AI-powered commerce channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search, and the Gemini app. This launch follows the public availability of the Agentic plan, a new offering designed for brands not primarily using Shopify, enabling them to list products in the Shopify Catalog and access the same AI-driven marketplaces.

This move represents a significant change in online retail strategies by centralizing product distribution. Instead of merchants needing to manage separate integrations or fragmented data feeds for each AI platform, this model ensures real-time synchronization of inventory and pricing across all supported channels.

Expanding Reach Through ChatGPT

With ChatGPT now available to thousands of Shopify merchants, products are seamlessly discoverable via the Shopify Catalog. Mobile users can complete purchases within an in-app browser, while desktop users are redirected to the merchant’s website. Merchants retain control over pricing, payment methods, and checkout experiences, with orders recorded in the Shopify Admin as referrals from ChatGPT.

In addition to ChatGPT, Shopify merchants have already engaged hundreds of brands on Microsoft Copilot. The inclusion of Shop Pay for these channels will soon be available, facilitating seamless checkouts. Selected brands are also leveraging AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app with support from the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard developed by Shopify and Google.

New Opportunities for Non-Shopify Merchants

The Agentic plan, now globally available, offers brands operating outside of Shopify a chance to list their products in the Shopify Catalog and gain access to these AI-driven marketplaces without changing their existing commerce setup. For Google-specific integrations, brands can link their Merchant Center account through the Shopify App Store’s Google & YouTube app.

Regarding cost, the commercial model for Agentic Storefronts does not introduce additional transaction fees beyond standard processing rates, making it an attractive option for merchants considering new distribution channels powered by AI.

Overall, this development highlights the growing role of AI in retail commerce, positioning these assistants as intermediaries between consumers and retailers, distinct from traditional search or social commerce models.
