Expanding the Reach

Following a successful pilot in Spain with Banco Santander last year, Mastercard has continued to expand its Agent Pay platform. The company recently trialed the platform in the UAE with Majid Al Futtaim, enabling an AI agent to purchase movie tickets at a local cinema.

Enhancing the Platform

As AI agents become more integral to payment processes, questions of security and accuracy are increasingly important. To address these concerns, major technology companies like Coinbase are developing agentic commerce protocols that outline how agents can authenticate transactions within regulatory limits.

The trials conducted by Mastercard and Banco Santander illustrate the potential for agentic commerce to operate within existing financial infrastructures. While there remain challenges in scaling this model—such as fraud prevention and technical reliability—the initial results offer promising insights into its future applications, including consumer, commercial, and enterprise transactions.
