UK-based PPRO has collaborated with PayPal to integrate Swish as a payment option within the PayPal ecosystem. This move is aimed at allowing the approximately 8.7 million active users of Swish in Sweden to make payments using their preferred method when shopping online across different international merchants.

This integration leverages PPRO’s local payments platform to bridge Swish’s domestic payment system with PayPal’s global merchant network.

Broader Cooperation Between PayPal and PPRO

Through this partnership, PayPal has enabled over 30 local payment methods for its merchants worldwide. PPRO plays the role of a technology provider for these local payment infrastructures.

Ecommerce Landscape in Sweden

Sweden is considered one of Europe’s more advanced e-commerce markets, with projected online sales reaching about USD 15 billion by 2025, according to Mordor Intelligence. A significant portion of Swedish online spending goes towards foreign retailers, with 82% of PayPal users in Sweden having made purchases from overseas merchants by 2025, as reported internally by PayPal.

Simon Nilsson, Chief Business Officer at Swish, views the integration positively, seeing it as a logical step to expand the availability of Swish in e-commerce settings. This collaboration connects a trusted payment method among millions of Swedish consumers with PayPal’s global platform.

Motie Bring, CEO at PPRO, emphasizes that their partnership with PayPal is centered around making local payment methods more accessible for international commerce. Introducing Swish to the PayPal platform aims to link global merchants with one of Europe’s most digitally advanced consumer markets, offering Swedish shoppers a familiar checkout experience and enabling merchants to tap into new markets.

Impact on Merchants and Consumers

The integration helps merchants using PayPal avoid setting up separate local payment arrangements for capturing demand from Swedish consumers. For Swedish customers, it brings an internationally recognized payment method into their online shopping journey. This partnership reflects the trend of global payment platforms expanding coverage through infrastructure collaborations rather than establishing direct connections with each domestic scheme.
