Nuvei has now enabled its European eCommerce clients to accept payments through Wero, the digital wallet developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI). This integration comes after initial testing where Nuvei was among the first processors to complete a trial transaction using Wero’s account-to-account infrastructure. Wero utilizes SEPA Instant Credit Transfer rails, allowing customers to pay merchants directly from their bank accounts within seconds.
The system aims to facilitate cross-border payments in Europe with faster settlement times compared to traditional card-based methods. By integrating Wero, merchants can offer an additional payment option that could potentially reduce processing costs and expedite fund arrival into their accounts.
Increasing preference for instant account-to-account payments
In recent years, European consumers have increasingly favored local banking system-linked payment methods, leading to higher checkout abandonment rates when preferred options are not available. Industry research highlights that expanding the range of payment choices can enhance conversion rates and foster repeat purchases. According to official reports, millions of users across Europe currently use Wero, with over one hundred million peer-to-peer transactions completed, equating to several billion euros in value.
Nuvei representatives stated that their integration aims to broaden payment options for merchants while ensuring quick and secure online checkout experiences aligned with consumer preferences. The company believes this tool can help capture additional sales by offering a route that matches European consumers’ habits.
EPI officials see the launch as part of a broader effort to provide an alternative to card schemes across Europe. They emphasize the importance of having payment processors in live environments for widespread adoption throughout the region.
