Nubank has introduced a contactless payment feature for Android that unites Pix, debit, and credit into one tap process.

This new ‘Pay by Tap’ option enables users to make payments simply by bringing their NFC-enabled Android device near an appropriate terminal. The service allows customers to opt for either Pix or a debit/credit card within the same interface as part of a phased rollout aimed at Nubank’s Android customer base.

Operational Details

Users can access ‘Pay by Tap’ through two paths in the Nubank app: under ‘My Cards’ or within the Pix section. A virtual card is automatically generated and tokenized upon initial use, requiring no additional setup from the user.

Each transaction necessitates authentication using either device biometrics or a password for security purposes. Tokenization ensures that card data is not transmitted at the point of sale, as Nubank explains, enhancing fraud protection. Users can also designate Nubank as their default digital wallet on the device or create a home screen shortcut for quick access.

Unified Payment Experience

The feature integrates Pix and traditional card-based payments into one seamless tap experience, leveraging Brazil’s national instant payment system, which has gained widespread adoption since its inception in November 2020.

Nubank’s move aims to bridge the gap between different payment methods by offering a single device that can handle various transactions without switching between multiple apps. This smartphone-based solution is designed for everyday use and enhances convenience, security, and flexibility in transactions.

Fausto Ibarra, Nubank’s Vice President of Digital Ecosystem, highlighted the intent to simplify the payment process, especially for frequent Pix usage, through a single streamlined experience. Nubank operates in Brazil and across Latin America, serving millions of customers. The phased rollout aligns with the company’s methodical approach to feature deployment among its large Android user group. No timeline has been specified for iOS device compatibility.
