Mastercard and KTC finalize their initial cooperative transaction in Thailand.

Mastercard and Krungthai Card completed Thailand’s first authenticated agentic payment transaction using Mastercard Agent Pay.

The transaction took place in a controlled environment, with an AI agent initiating the process via Mastercard Agent Pay. Elife acted as the merchant for this pilot project.

In the initial test scenario, an AI agent booked a ride from Suvarnabhumi airport to Central Chidlom using Elife’s ground transportation network. The booking and payment were managed autonomously by the agent, with tokenized credentials verified through Mastercard Payment Passkeys for secure customer validation and data protection.

Mastercard Agent Pay Operational Mechanism

Mastercard Agent Pay is engineered to offer the security framework necessary for AI-driven transactions. Each transaction involves a unique Mastercard Agentic Token issued to the specific agent involved. Consumer consent is explicitly sought before the transaction, and purchase confirmation is secured via Mastercard Payment Passkeys, ensuring that authentication remains under the control of the cardholder.

KTC was the first Thai financial institution to partner with Mastercard for agentic AI transactions. A KTC official stated that this collaboration underscores their strategic intent to integrate agentic commerce into their broader ecosystem.

Regional Deployment and Infrastructure

The Thailand pilot builds upon a series of authenticated agentic transactions that Mastercard executed across the Asia-Pacific region earlier in 2026. These deployments include Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, India, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. This progress indicates a phased regional expansion of agent-initiated payment infrastructure.

The intended expansion aims to cover additional industry sectors beyond travel, including entertainment and retail, which suggests the technology is being positioned as a broadly applicable payments layer rather than a specialized solution for specific industries.

This Thailand pilot showcases how tokenization, passkey authentication, and AI agent orchestration can be integrated within existing card network infrastructure. Furthermore, leveraging established authentication standards instead of introducing entirely new frameworks points to a strategy of extending current security protocols into emerging agentic use cases, potentially lowering the barrier to adoption for financial institutions operating within Mastercard’s network.
