Lufthansa Tests Amadeus EU Digital Identity Wallet for Travelers

Amadeus and Lufthansa have jointly tested the EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) for various travel scenarios, including online check-in, airport check-in, baggage drop, and boarding.

Testing in 2025

In summer 2025, these companies participated in the Large Scale pilot project of the EU Digital Identity Wallet Consortium. The tests covered a range of use cases, aiming to refine the functionality for a smoother travel experience.

EUDI Wallet and Its Benefits

Expected to be available for EU citizens in 2026, EUDI Wallet will enable users to store identity documents like passports or national ID cards, as well as payment methods and biometric profiles. Key areas of optimization include:

  • Online check-in, where travelers can opt to use stored documents instead of manually entering passport details.
  • Biometric enrolment for secure sharing of biometric data online or at airport touchpoints, reducing the need for selfies or document scans.
  • Airport usage through tapping smartphones at various points such as check-in desks, self-service kiosks, bag drop machines, lounge entry, and boarding gates. This applies if users have opted to use biometrics; otherwise, they may still provide physical documents.
  • Border control where travelers can tap their phones rather than scanning passports at immigration e-gates in the future.
  • Paid services through stored cards within the wallet for online payments and airport touchpoints.

Amadeus has also enhanced its Travel Ready solution to support EUDI Wallet. This tool, which can be customized by travel companies or airports, offers advanced verification of visas. Amadeus aims to ensure compatibility with all future wallets that use Digital Identity.

In addition to the ongoing testing with Lufthansa and other partners, Amadeus plans further tests on biometric enrolment and immigration in the second half of 2025.
