Swedish company Klarna and American firm eBay have announced the addition of six new territories—Australia, Belgium, Canada, Ireland, Poland, and Switzerland—to their integrated resale platform.

This integration enables purchases made with Klarna to be seamlessly listed for resale on eBay via the Klarna app. Details such as product images and descriptions are automatically filled using data from the original purchase.

Following its launch in the United States and the United Kingdom in December 2024, the feature has already generated over a million listings by Klarna users, with significant interest noted in sectors like automotive accessories, fashion items, and other categories.

Operational Mechanism

User can initiate resale listings within the Klarna app for eligible past purchases. The feature simplifies the listing process by pre-filling critical details from purchase data, thereby saving effort typically required for manual input. This integration links Klarna’s transaction records with eBay’s seller network, enabling users to transition directly from purchasing to reselling without switching applications.

David Sykes, Klarna’s Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized that embedding resale within the payment process enhances the value of past transactions and signifies strong consumer enthusiasm. He believes circular commerce should be integrated into daily purchase activities.

Avritti Khandurie Mittal, eBay Services’ Vice President of Product, highlighted that this partnership accelerates the sale of high-quality pre-owned items and aligns with eBay’s commitment to global recommerce growth.

Market Context

The expansion follows a broader trend of increasing secondhand commerce worldwide. According to eBay’s Recommerce Report, about 90% of consumers intend to maintain or increase their spending on secondhand goods. For Klarna, this initiative marks an advancement beyond its role as a payment service, extending into the full lifecycle of consumer transactions, from initial purchase to resale. For eBay, it offers a direct path for acquiring new listings tied to recent customer purchases, particularly in sectors with strong resale demand.
