FirstRand Bank has been a pioneer in South Africa by adopting Kinexys Digital Payments, a private blockchain network managed by Kinexys by J.P. Morgan, for programmable treasury payment transactions.

The official press release states that this deployment facilitates the execution of automated and near real-time US dollar transfers within the bank’s treasury group outside traditional settlement periods.

By leveraging Programmable Payments functionality, FirstRand Bank’s treasury division has established predefined conditions under which automatic USD transactions occur between Blockchain Deposit Accounts denominated in US dollars on the Kinexys network. This setup enables 24/7 intragroup payments across legal entities, enhancing liquidity management through near-instant transactions based on pre-established criteria instead of being limited by regular banking hours or settlement cycles.

Regional Significance and Expansion Potential

This deployment is one of the earliest instances where a South African bank has utilized distributed ledger technology for treasury payments, signaling an increasing adoption of blockchain infrastructure within the Sub-Saharan African financial sector. FirstRand Bank suggests that the current application of Kinexys to internal USD payments could expand to broader customer payment solutions across a wider African region.

Kinexys by J.P. Morgan, part of J.P. Morgan Payments, participates directly in South African local payment systems and offers treasury services such as liquidity management, cross-currency solutions, and virtual accounts. J.P. Morgan Payments views Sub-Saharan Africa as a key area for its growth strategies.

Group Treasurer Bhulesh Singh of FirstRand expressed that the bank sees distributed ledger technology as pivotal to future financial market infrastructure. He believes that this Kinexys implementation will enhance the speed and efficiency of US dollar payments, with the potential to create broader solutions for customers in Africa.
