Instacart has launched an app for ChatGPT, designed to offer a seamless shopping and checkout experience within the OpenAI platform.
This integration lets users request meal ideas, check availability of items at nearby stores, and complete payments directly in the ChatGPT interface without navigating away.
Representatives from Instacart stated that their service, built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, aims to simplify everyday grocery tasks by allowing shoppers to transition from discussion to purchase within a single workflow. Officials from OpenAI noted this aligns with their broader objective of connecting conversational prompts with services that assist in routine household planning.
The app is available via both desktop and mobile web versions of ChatGPT, with iOS and Android support expanding as Instant Checkout rolls out across native applications. Users can activate the feature by initiating a prompt related to Instacart and signing in for the first time; on iOS, users need the latest version of ChatGPT to enable checkout.
New In-chat Shopping Features
Upon activation, the tool uses Instacart’s retail network to generate suggested baskets based on OpenAI models. Payments are processed within the ChatGPT window through Stripe, with plans for digital wallet integration in future updates.
Instacart frames this rollout as part of its strategy to support diverse shopping channels, including their own app, retailer websites, partner platforms, or AI agents. The company emphasizes that its fulfillment network and data infrastructure position it well as a provider for technology companies seeking to link conversational services with local product availability.
In addition, Instacart is continuously incorporating AI into its platform, such as personal shopping tools and enterprise-focused AI solutions for retailers. According to the firm, their extensive catalogue size, real-time inventory data, and delivery network enable AI agents to recommend locally available items that align with users’ established preferences.
