India and Bhutan have launched a joint initiative to facilitate cross-border remittances by integrating India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Bhutan’s postal network via the Universal Postal Union’s PosTransfer system.
This collaboration aims to extend digital money transfer services to citizens of both nations utilizing existing postal facilities.
India Post and Bhutan Post have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on postal cooperation. The agreement covers various aspects such as operational processes, technological advancements, staff training, logistics coordination, philatelic activities, and knowledge sharing.
Training and Technology Sharing
Under the terms of the MoU, Bhutan Post will participate in training programs at institutions affiliated with India’s Department of Posts, including the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai National Postal Academy. The focus areas include operational skills, managerial abilities, and contemporary postal sector technologies.
Regarding technology cooperation, both parties agreed to exchange experiences and best practices from India Post’s technological ecosystem. This includes collaboration on digital postal services and the implementation of India’s Digital Address Code, which aims to enhance address accuracy, logistics planning, and service delivery.
India also plans to share insights on leveraging postal networks for financial inclusion through postal financial services. These include promoting public savings and providing accessible banking services to underprivileged communities. Domestic operations in this area have seen significant progress by India Post.
