Fujitsu has created a Fast Identity Online (FIDO)-compliant platform that integrates smartphone biometric authentication and near-field communication (NFC) functions to grant IoT devices access to cloud services. This system, named the Online Biometric Authentication Service, operates on an on-device basis for storing biometric data.
To use this service, a user must conduct a biometric scan on their smartphone when attempting to access an IoT device or service, as Fujitsu has described in EET Asia. The authentication confirmation is then securely transmitted to a cloud-based server. Meanwhile, NFC technology verifies the user’s proximity to the IoT device or service they are trying to access.
This platform enables customers to establish online personal authentication systems that do not rely on passwords for various daily scenarios like online banking and shopping, travel arrangements, and car sharing. Additionally, it supports FIDO through facial recognition obtained via camera-equipped smartphones and other biometric data.
Fujitsu intends to launch the Online Biometric Authentication service in Japan beginning early April 2017.
