Unzer, a payment platform serving small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Germany, Austria, and other regions, has partnered with the European Payments Initiative (EPI). This collaboration aims to support the introduction of Wero, a new European digital payment method designed for peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions. Wero is envisioned as a mobile wallet that enables instant payments between individuals, offering secure and independent ways to shop and pay across Europe.

Connecting Payments Across Europe

Wero was launched last summer and is currently available for P2P payments in Germany, France, and Belgium. Plans are underway to expand its functionality to support e-commerce, mobile commerce, and point-of-sale (POS) transactions. Unzer aims to facilitate merchants’ access to Wero’s services starting from September 2025 by integrating it into their operations through the embedded platform UnzerOne.

Unzer’s Role in the Ecosystem

By incorporating Wero, Unzer advances its mission of simplifying commerce and accelerating digital adoption for SMEs. This payment method is designed to be local, secure, and built specifically for Europe by Europeans. Unzer chose to collaborate with EPI due to its merchant network and flexible platform capabilities.

Other Developments from Unzer

In February 2025, Unzer introduced a direct bank transfer solution in partnership with Mastercard, initially rolled out in Germany before expanding to all SEPA countries. This initiative allows users to make payments directly from their bank accounts without requiring a credit or debit card.

Unzer also plans to offer a white-label option that enables merchants to customize the checkout process according to their brand’s identity. This personalization is expected to enhance customer trust and loyalty, reduce cart abandonment rates, and create more convenient shopping experiences.
