Wero, as part of the European Payments Initiative (EPI), has launched an e-commerce payment solution to facilitate online transactions for merchants in Germany.

The new initiative includes a list of initial partner merchants such as Eventim, Decathlon, Lidl, Rossmann, CEWE, Cineplex, Zooplus, Dott, Hornbach, Air Europa, Veepee, and BAUR. These businesses can now benefit from a streamlined payment process for their online customers.

Wero E-commerce Deployment

As of now, Wero e-commerce is operational in Germany through Sparkassen and Volksbanken / Raiffeisenbanken networks, making it accessible to around 46 million Europeans. The project plans further expansion by incorporating more member banks in the upcoming weeks.

Developed as an alternative to global payment systems, Wero offers a fast and secure mobile payment option for European users. Supported by 16 participating banks and PSPs, with EPI currently unifying over 1,100 members across various roles such as customer-facing banks and merchant-aligned acquirers.

Current supporters in Germany include Buckaroo, Deutsche Bank, Nexi, Nuvei, Payabl, PAYONE, Pay.NL, PPRO, Unzer, Société Générale, Stripe, VR Payment, and Worldline. Additional partners are set to be announced soon.

In 2026, Wero e-commerce is expected to roll out in four new markets: Belgium, France, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. The migration of Wero’s iDEAL solution will commence next year.

Benefiting from EPI’s API-driven infrastructure, merchants can enjoy a simplified onboarding procedure. Wero enables retailers to connect with consumers across European markets, while shoppers benefit from convenient cross-border payment options both online and in-store for various subscription-based services.

EPI is enthusiastic about this initiative, highlighting the growing demand for a European-centric alternative to international payment systems. The rollout of Wero e-commerce signifies a significant step towards a more independent European payments landscape, driven by collaboration among banks, merchants, and PSPs.
