Brex has recently introduced an integration with ChatGPT, which lets users explore expense data and policy information using natural language.

This development follows Brex’s decision to make its corporate spend management platform accessible through the ChatGPT app marketplace. Through this integration, users can pose conversational queries directly within OpenAI’s application to access their expense details.

Limited read-access via natural language

The official press release states that with this integration, Brex users can engage with their financial data using ChatGPT without switching applications. The accessibility of the information is controlled by existing Brex permissions, thus ensuring that the data visible through ChatGPT mirrors what’s available within the Brex platform.

For standard users, they can verify if expenses need receipts or memos, check card limits and current balances in real time, search for expenses based on merchants, amounts, or dates, review card statuses and shipping details, and monitor reimbursement timelines. Administrators have the additional ability to run natural language queries across all company expenses.

Currently, access is read-only; users can fetch information via ChatGPT but must revert to the Brex platform for actions. Brex notes that write capabilities are in development as part of their broader roadmap plans.

Context within the fintech ecosystem

This move aligns with a broader trend in fintech, where financial tools are being embedded into productivity and communication platforms. Brex already supports integrations with Slack, Uber, and other third-party applications, as well as automated receipt matching and expense memo generation within its platform.

Integrating spend data into ChatGPT extends this strategy to AI-assisted workflows, enabling employees and managers to address compliance questions (such as policy rules for client entertainment or documentation needs) without changing contexts. For organizations that have adopted ChatGPT Enterprise, it also lessens the need to open a separate finance tool during routine work.

The ChatGPT app marketplace, managed by OpenAI, facilitates connections between third-party applications and allows enterprise users to query them through the ChatGPT interface. Brex’s inclusion signifies an early step for financial services providers in establishing presence within this marketplace, though a complete list of financial apps available has not yet been disclosed.
