Klarna and Article have entered into a strategic partnership to introduce flexible payment options at checkout for furniture purchases across the United States and Canada.

By integrating Klarna’s payment solutions directly into Article’s online checkout process, customers will be able to choose from various payment methods including paying in full, splitting their purchase into four interest-free installments, or financing larger orders over an extended period. Article, a Canadian direct-to-consumer furniture retailer established since 2013, leverages a digital-first approach to reach both the US and Canadian markets.

Enhancing Consumer Choice

The home essentials category has seen significant growth for Klarna in North America, highlighting an increasing demand among consumers for flexible payment options when making larger purchases like sofas, dining sets, and bedroom furniture. This collaboration positions buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) services as a practical solution for thoughtful, big-ticket items rather than impulse buys.

According to Steven Clarke, Head of Klarna Canada, furniture purchases often represent a more deliberate online transaction, where payment flexibility significantly influences the decision-making process. Olivia Buhren, Director of Sales and Service at Article, emphasized that this partnership aims to offer customers greater control over how they finance higher-value home acquisitions.

Strategic Expansion in Home Furnishings

This partnership aligns with Klarna’s broader strategy of expanding its merchant base by integrating flexible payment solutions into categories characterized by high average order values and longer purchasing cycles. In the North American home furnishings market, there has been a notable rise in the adoption of BNPL services as consumers look to manage their spending on durable goods more effectively.

Klarna recently enhanced its reach in this category just a few weeks ago by partnering with Michael Kors for payment options in the US and Canada. This collaboration allowed Michael Kors’ customers to utilize Klarna’s instalment plans at checkout, facilitating more flexible purchasing experiences.
