A recent survey conducted by Mastercard, in partnership with the Harris Poll, indicates an increase in holiday scams across Europe. The study reveals that over three-quarters of participants encountered suspected scams in the past year, signaling a growing trend of fraudulent activities during the festive season.
While online shopping provides convenience, it also amplifies the risk of encountering fake websites and unfulfilled orders. Nearly two-thirds of respondents believe that holiday-related fraud becomes more prevalent and sophisticated. Although most shoppers are aware of this issue, many still take risks to secure last-minute gifts. A significant number admitted to purchasing from unfamiliar retailers during the holidays with little or no research beforehand.
Growing Cautiousness Amid Holiday Scams
Many people now leave websites that lack clear security indicators such as encrypted payment symbols or diverse safe payment methods. Older individuals are more cautious and often avoid such sites. Other red flags include unusually low prices, spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and subpar website design.
The survey also found that 14% of respondents received items that never arrived, while 10% obtained counterfeit products in previous holiday seasons. Moreover, 29% reported losing money due to scams during the festive period, with nearly half of Gen Z (45%) and Millennials (40%) victims.
Mastercard has employed transaction monitoring and artificial intelligence to combat fraud, preventing billions in losses over recent years. The company stresses that shoppers should use robust, unique passwords and enable multi-factor authentication for additional security. They also advise checking that websites use secure connections and being wary of unrealistic offers. Limiting shared personal information online is another recommendation.
For added safety, Mastercard suggests monitoring account activity and confirming the authenticity of urgent requests, particularly those involving AI-generated impersonations.
