Shift4, a comprehensive payments and commerce technology company, has agreed to acquire Smartpay.

An Acquisition of Smartpay

Smartpay operates as an independent provider of point-of-sale (POS) and payment processing solutions in Australia and New Zealand. The transaction is priced at USD 180 million or USD 0.71 per share, marking a 46.5% premium over the 90-day volume-weighted average price.

Shift4 intends to integrate Smartpay’s distribution network with its suite of software and payment solutions, aiming to enhance its market presence in Australia and New Zealand. The acquisition is anticipated to close by Q4 2025 pending regulatory approvals.

Strategic Move for Expansion

Shift4’s strategy involves leveraging acquisitions to deliver a more integrated payment experience with localized distribution, services, support, merchant products, and proprietary payment networks. This approach has already been successfully deployed in regions like the UK, Germany, and Ireland.

Consolidating Payment Solutions

By acquiring Smartpay, Shift4 aims to expand its global payment offerings, integrating Smartpay’s services into its platform. The move is expected to increase transaction volume and provide access to new markets. The combined entity seeks to position itself as a global provider of unified commerce solutions.
