barq and Alipay+ have teamed up to facilitate cross-border QR payments for customers in over 220 markets.

This collaboration allows barq’s users to conduct scan-and-pay transactions at Alipay+-enabled merchants outside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), covering more than 220 global markets.

The implementation, set to roll out gradually from May 2026, enhances barq’s payment capabilities beyond domestic usage. It enables users traveling abroad to make mobile payments in various sectors including retail, dining, transportation, and healthcare. Notable destinations include regions such as the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and the UK.

Strategic Positioning within Regional Fintech

Within this partnership, Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 program, which aims to decrease reliance on cash and develop digital payment infrastructure across the nation, finds a practical application. Cross-border QR payment capabilities align with these objectives by allowing Saudi consumers to conduct digital transactions in international markets using familiar domestic tools.

For Ant International, this agreement continues its strategy of integrating regional digital wallets into the Alipay+ ecosystem. The company, operating in digital payments, digitization services, and financial technology, is expanding its partnerships in EMEA to boost cross-border transaction volumes and enhance digital financial inclusion for small and medium-sized merchants. Both entities will also focus on meeting clients’ needs, preferences, and demands while maintaining compliance with industry regulations.

For barq, this move underscores an intent to position itself as a platform with international reach rather than one limited to the domestic Saudi market. As fintech competition in the Gulf region intensifies due to regulatory modernization under Vision 2030, cross-border capabilities are emerging as key differentiators for applications aiming to expand beyond local payment services.
