Shopify aims to obtain US money transmitter licenses in various states.

Shopify has secured money transmitter licences in 18 states and Puerto Rico, as reported by The Information. This effort is part of the company’s broader strategic vision to expand its financial services offerings.

According to a spokesperson, Shopify aims to become a provider of prepaid access, which would allow it to offer wallet-style functionality directly to merchants similar to Venmo’s service. While these licences won’t replace existing banking partnerships, they will help in reducing fees and enhancing the range of financial products available to customers.

Shopify currently generates revenue through add-on financial services on top of its core subscription business, including payment processing via Stripe, a third-party provider. Obtaining the necessary licences marks a step towards greater control over this aspect of their operations.

Regulatory and Competitive Landscape

In the United States, money transmitter licences are subject to state-level regulation, necessitating individual applications in each jurisdiction—a process that can be both time-consuming and resource-intensive. Achieving coverage across all 50 states and US territories is a key milestone for fintech companies looking to operate payment and money movement services nationally.

This move positions Shopify among other commerce and technology platforms aiming to develop their own financial infrastructures. For merchants on the platform, this could mean more integrated financial tools, although the specific scope of new offerings will depend on existing or future banking partnerships.

No timeline has been provided for completing the licensing process in remaining US jurisdictions.
