Nexi, a paytech group based in Italy, has integrated Wero, an account-to-account payment method from the European Payments Initiative (EPI), into German e-commerce through its subsidiary, Nexi Germany.
Leading German online merchants including BAUR, Quelle, and Bünting Group, which operates Combi.de and MyTime.de under its umbrella, have signed up to offer Wero at checkout. Additional merchants are expected to be announced in the upcoming weeks.
BAUR and Quelle, both part of the BAUR-Gruppe, aim to incorporate Wero into their ComfortPay service. Computop, a Nexi group company, is providing technical support for Wero’s integration in Germany as the technical service provider.
Rollout and European Context
Initially launched by EPI for person-to-person payments, Wero is now expanding to e-commerce, with plans for point-of-sale integration as a future phase. Currently available in Belgium, France, and Germany, additional European markets and partners are expected to join. The initiative is supported by 16 banks and payment service providers.
The rollout aligns with efforts to build a sovereign payment infrastructure within Europe that reduces reliance on non-European card networks. Wero aims to provide the speed and cost benefits of account-to-account settlements over traditional card-based methods.
Commenting on the development, Martina Weimert, CEO of EPI, emphasized that the Nexi integration is a significant step towards extending Wero’s reach to more German merchants and customers. Roberto Catanzaro, Chief Business Officer for Merchant Solutions at Nexi and an EPI board member, highlighted this as a crucial milestone in establishing a more sovereign and competitive European payments landscape.
