American Express has launched the Amex Agentic Commerce Experiences (ACE) Developer Kit, a technical framework aimed at integrating American Express cards and membership services into AI-driven commerce. The initiative also includes a commitment to protect Card Members from charges due to errors made by registered AI agents.
The ACE Developer Kit offers selected developers access to five integrated services: agent registration to authenticate AI agents on the Amex network; account enablement for Card Members to register cards for agentic transactions; intent intelligence to capture purchase intent for authentication, authorization, and dispute support; payment credentials enabling verified agents to complete payments using tokenized credentials; and cart context sharing to optimize validation and dispute investigation.
Agent Purchase Protection and Closed-Loop Advantage
Amex Agent Purchase Protection is a pioneering feature. It guarantees that Card Members will not be charged for transactions if an AI agent mistakenly authorizes a purchase, provided the intent was authenticated. This protection extends to future eligible transactions.
American Express’s closed-loop network, which acts as both issuer and acquirer and provides direct connections with Card Members and merchants, enables comprehensive transaction oversight. The company claims this structure gives it an advantage in addressing challenges posed by agentic commerce, such as intent-driven authorization, fraud prevention, and dispute resolution.
In addition to the developer kit, American Express is focusing on three strategic initiatives in agentic commerce: embedding payment capabilities within AI ecosystems, making Amex membership benefits like Resy restaurant reservations and Amex Offers accessible across various AI platforms, and developing proprietary AI-powered experiences for its own platforms.
According to Luke Gebb, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Innovation at American Express, the ACE Developer Kit fosters trust and control in AI commerce environments, while Amex Agent Purchase Protection ensures Card Members are safeguarded when an AI agent acts on their behalf with authenticated intent.
