Starling Bank has introduced Starling Assistant, an in-app AI financial advisor designed as one of the pioneering efforts in the UK.

This digital assistant was launched to personal current account users from March 20, 2026, with plans to expand support to business and joint accounts shortly afterward. It leverages Google Gemini on the Google Cloud platform for its operations.

Starling Assistant provides a conversational banking experience where it can handle tasks like setting up automatic savings goals, managing bill payments, organizing spending across various budgets, and offering detailed transaction analyses based on user queries.

The tool also creates personalized financial quizzes, explains account features, and offers tailored assistance to customers with specific needs, such as setting up sign language services, gambling blocks, or guidance for those facing financial difficulties.

Technical Underpinning and Privacy Measures

This initiative is a result of eight years of AI development at Starling. Notable among the recent innovations are Spending Intelligence, which enables users to ask about spending habits in natural language, and Scam Intelligence, which helps identify online scams, both of which can be accessed via Starling Assistant.

Starling has assured that the use of this assistant is opt-in and that all data remains within its Google Cloud environment without being used for training purposes.

The agentic capability of Starling Assistant signifies a significant leap from traditional conversational AI tools. Instead of just providing information, it can execute tasks directly in the account based on verbal instructions, such as setting up automatic transfers or configuring spending spaces.

Harriet Rees, Group Chief Information Officer at Starling, highlighted that this launch represents a major advancement for banking powered by agentic AI. The bank intends to continue integrating additional AI features into the assistant’s interface. Raman Bhatia, Group CEO of Starling, also emphasized that agentic AI is the next frontier in banking.
