Defrancq has positioned itself among the leading Belgian companies that now offer their customers the option to pay invoices using Wero, the European payment solution that succeeded Payconiq. This collaboration is facilitated by POM, a payment service provider.

In a move announced on February 12, 2026, Defrancq integrated Wero into its services. Unlike some alternative payment methods, Wero supports higher transaction amounts, making it particularly suitable for business payments. Prior to this development, Wero’s primary use in Belgium was for person-to-person transactions.

As of the announcement, Wero is now available for businesses that are ING or KBC customers. Additional Belgian banks are expected to support Wero later in 2026.

POM Enables Merchant Deployment

In discussing the launch, Tom Totté, Co-Founder of POM, highlighted the company’s preparation efforts. By ensuring that both technical and operational readiness were in place, POM was able to bring the first merchant online as soon as the first banks were ready.

Jérome Bridelance, Operations Director at Defrancq, emphasized that Wero represents a natural progression for digital payments within their company. The higher transaction limits and simplified payment processes offered by Wero align with Defrancq’s focus on innovation and customer service.

According to Martina Weimert, CEO of the European Payments Initiative (EPI), Wero is designed to simplify, strengthen, and increase the independence of European payments. The transition from person-to-person to business transactions marks a crucial step in growing a trusted, pan-European payment solution that benefits both merchants and consumers across Europe.

Wero’s Growth in the European Payment Landscape

Wero operates as a mobile payment solution developed by EPI, a consortium of European banks working towards creating a unified European payment infrastructure. The system allows for instant account-to-account transfers through mobile applications.

Before its integration into the Wero platform, Payconiq operated in Belgium and Luxembourg as a mobile payment solution. Its transition aligns existing Belgian payment infrastructure with broader European payment initiatives.

Higher transaction limits make it feasible for businesses to use Wero for invoice payments that exceed typical mobile payment thresholds. Traditional mobile payment solutions often impose transaction limits due to fraud risk management and regulatory requirements. Wero’s institutional backing and direct bank integration enable higher limits appropriate for commercial invoicing.

EPI members include banks from Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain, serving millions of customers across participating markets. At the beginning of February 2026, Banking Circle announced its integration with Wero into its infrastructure for payment service providers. This move positioned Banking Circle as a key banking partner for companies looking to adopt the pan-European payment standard.
