Regula has introduced support for mobile driver’s licences (mDLs) in its Document Reader SDK, reflecting the growing acceptance of digital identity credentials.

This update targets organizations that require reliable verification of digital IDs as physical documents are increasingly complemented or replaced. In certain regions of the United States, mDLs are being integrated into platforms like Apple Wallet, while initiatives supporting digital identities in the European Union and the United Arab Emirates highlight their broader use beyond transportation.

mDLs extend beyond transportation applications

The updated SDK is based on the ISO/IEC 18013-5 standard, ensuring interoperability across various wallets and jurisdictions. Regula’s technology supports verification by aligning with this framework without depending on proprietary implementations.

According to Regula, mDL functionality can operate in both physical and remote environments. Verification can start via QR codes or NFC, with data exchange facilitated through Bluetooth or NFC based on the situation. This allows for consistent use across various scenarios such as border control, airport security, financial services onboarding, and controlled-access facilities.

Regula representatives mention that mDL support addresses common issues with physical identity documents, like loss, theft, and forgery risks. They note the benefits of selective data sharing through mobile credentials, allowing individuals to present only necessary information for specific interactions while still meeting required assurance standards.

Additional technical details on the SDK update are provided in Regula’s published documentation and product materials.
