Klarna Strives to Mimic Super App Success in America

The super app model has achieved remarkable success in China, as exemplified by Alipay and WeChat Pay. Klarna now aims to follow a similar blueprint to establish itself in this market.

Primarily recognized for its buy now, pay later (BNPL) services, Klarna has been progressively diversifying its offerings. Recently, the company launched mobile phone plans in the U.S., featuring unlimited data, calls, and texts.

In an interview with CNBC, Klarna CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski outlined a strategy to develop a platform capable of managing all aspects of users’ financial lives along with numerous non-financial services.



Concerns have been raised about the potential downsides of closed ecosystems within the super app model. These platforms can potentially stifle growth, especially during challenging economic periods. For instance, when Alibaba began accepting payments from WeChat Pay on its e-commerce platforms, it was seen as a sign that the super app concept might be waning.



Technological Advancements


A key differentiator for Klarna is its advanced artificial intelligence technology. This AI-powered platform aims to cut through the clutter in the crowded market and provide personalized user experiences, transforming Klarna into a digital financial assistant akin to Visa and Mastercard’s agentic commerce solutions.



For example, if the app detects that a user is paying too much for their smartphone plan, it could suggest alternative solutions and facilitate the transition to a new provider. Such efforts go beyond Klarna’s BNPL roots, aiming to strengthen its position in the U.S. market with additional offerings such as a debit card.
