Airline technology provider Immfly has broadened its in-flight payments infrastructure through a partnership with Adyen. This initiative seeks to enhance onboard transactions under low connectivity and support airlines looking to boost secondary revenue streams.

The collaboration integrates Immfly’s in-flight digital platform with Adyen’s global payment network, offering a streamlined process for customers purchasing items like retail goods, seat upgrades, or connectivity services. The system is operational across more than 50 carriers and processes millions of transactions annually through approximately 4,000 point-of-sale terminals.

Operational Resilience and Transaction Efficiency

When aircraft are offline, the system queues payments for later processing and extends retries over several weeks if necessary. Tap-to-pay functionality is also supported to expedite transactions. According to internal testing, combined or multi-item purchases can be completed in under 30 seconds, significantly reducing checkout times compared to previous systems.

Aboard staff are provided with updated information on sales trends and purchasing patterns, aiding cabin crew in managing inventory and handling transactions more efficiently. Adyen’s risk management tools are incorporated into the joint solution to mitigate fraudulent activities, a feature crucial given the limited verification options during flights.

Beyond payment processing, this system enables airlines to experiment with new onboard retail formats, introduce additional ancillary products, and offer passengers a seamless payment experience consistent with ground-based expectations, regardless of currency or preferred payment method.
