On Monday, October 20, 2025, Amazon’s cloud computing division AWS faced a significant outage. This affected numerous widely used applications and services.

Disruptions were reported across various platforms such as Fortnite, Snapchat, Perplexity AI, Coinbase, Robinhood, and several UK banks and government websites.

AWS acknowledged the issues with increased error rates and latency problems. The company was implementing multiple recovery strategies to restore services. For further details, users were advised to check AWS’s status page; Amazon did not directly respond to queries.

Scope of Impact

Consumer-facing platforms like AI startup Perplexity and cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase confirmed that they were experiencing issues related to AWS. Similarly, Amazon’s own services, including its shopping website, Prime Video, and Alexa, faced operational challenges.

Gaming platforms such as Fortnite, Roblox, Clash Royale, and Clash of Clans temporarily went down. Financial services, including PayPal’s Venmo and Chime, experienced disruptions, with ride-hailing service Lyft reporting outages for thousands of users in the U.S.

In the UK, Lloyds Bank, Bank of Scotland, Vodafone, and BT reported connectivity problems. Even HM Revenue & Customs’ website was affected by the AWS issues. However, X’s platform remained operational as per Elon Musk.
