Expanding Service Offerings
Since Walmart took a majority stake in OnePay, the company has significantly enhanced its services and is now venturing into cryptocurrency trading. According to CNBC, OnePay customers will be able to trade bitcoin and ether using a partnership with Zerohash. While specific details have not been confirmed by OnePay, if users can hold these cryptocurrencies within the mobile app, it suggests they could convert their crypto holdings for purchases at Walmart or paying off balances.
The addition of cryptocurrency capabilities marks another significant milestone for OnePay, which was established just four years ago by Walmart and venture firm Ribbit Capital. The company has risen to become the fifth-ranked free finance app on Apple’s App Store, joining industry heavyweights like PayPal, Venmo, and Cash App.
Pursuing Super App Status
While OnePay’s Walmart connection has driven its rapid growth, the company was built independently with a vision to extend beyond even Walmart’s substantial customer base. Like other fintech firms, OnePay continues to expand its services. It partnered with Synchrony to issue Walmart store-branded credit cards after Walmart moved on from Capital One.
OnePay also helped Walmart add buy now, pay later (BNPL) through a partnership with Klarna. Currently, OnePay offers credit and debit cards, savings accounts, BNPL, a digital wallet, peer-to-peer payments, and wireless plans. This comprehensive suite of services rivals those found in China’s super apps, Alipay and WeChat Pay.
Many fintech firms are now aiming to replicate the super app model overseas. For instance, Klarna has introduced features such as debit cards and wireless plans. Bolt, initially a merchant checkout solution, is also shifting towards becoming a super app.
PayPal, Venmo, and Cash App have expanded beyond traditional P2P payments but lack the Walmart partnership that OnePay enjoys. Nonetheless, these platforms currently operate more established ecosystems with stronger crypto and digital assets capabilities for now.
