GoPay has recently introduced a feature that allows its users to make payments at QRIS-enabled merchants in Japan, following Bank Indonesia’s expansion of the cross-border QR code payment system.
Enhancing Payment Accessibility for Travelers
Indonesian travelers can now use their GoPay app to scan Japanese Pay (JPQR) codes and complete transactions at participating stores.
Expanding QRIS Across Borders
GoTo Financial, the company behind GoPay, currently supports cross-border payments in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore through QRIS. Bank Indonesia is also exploring a potential full-scale launch of QRIS integration with China’s payment systems by the end of 2025.
As of June 2025, according to the central bank, cross-border QRIS transactions had reached USD 103.6 billion. This expansion underscores Bank Indonesia’s efforts to broaden QRIS access on an international level.
The initial roll-out of QRIS in August 2019 addressed Indonesia’s payment fragmentation problem by enabling merchants to accept payments from various e-wallets or banks using a single QR code, thus simplifying the process for both businesses and consumers. The significant domestic adoption has laid a robust foundation for further international expansion.
Supporting SMEs via QRIS Integration
In February 2025, HitPay, a Singapore-based commerce platform for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), integrated with the QRIS system to help merchants easily enter the Indonesian market without setting up a local business entity. This integration not only simplified payment acceptance but also provided businesses with access to local payment methods such as e-wallets and bank transfers.
