Klarna, a digital bank and payment service provider, has recently extended its debit-first card to the European Union countries. This development enables consumers to make upfront payments at any location that accepts Visa.

Following on from the successful launch of the debit-first card in the United States, Klarna introduced this feature across the EU. Since July 2025, over 685,000 Americans have opted for the Klarna card, which offers both immediate payment and flexible billing options.

Key Features of the Klarna Card

Backed by Visa Flexible Credential, the Klarna Card functions primarily as a debit card. It provides users with the flexibility to pay immediately from their own funds while also offering alternative payment plans through the Klarna app. Consumers can select among three options: Pay in 3, Pay Later, or longer-term financing for large purchases, subject to approval.

This card is accepted at over 150 million Visa merchant locations globally, both online and offline. By integrating upfront payments with flexible delayed billing options, the Klarna Card aims to enhance consumers’ daily banking experiences by offering greater control over their spending habits.

Klarna’s Product Portfolio Expansion

The introduction of the card is part of Klarna’s broader strategy to expand its range of card-based services. These products currently account for 10% of Klarna’s global payment volume and are already available in numerous EU countries including Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden.

Klarna intends to continue expanding its geographical reach, planning to roll out the card in Denmark, Germany, Norway, and Poland in the coming months. This move underscores Klarna’s commitment to diversifying its services and catering to an increasingly tech-savvy customer base.

In recent times, Klarna has been focusing on partnerships with key players within the industry. For instance, at the end of August 2025, Klarna teamed up with Walmart Canada to offer flexible payment solutions in over 400 store locations, allowing customers to use BNPL options both online and in-store.
