Google Pay has recently enhanced its Chrome autofill feature by incorporating “pay over time” options alongside credit and debit card choices within the menu. This update highlights the increasing acceptance of buy now, pay later services as standard payment methods.

Affirm Becomes More Accessible

The biggest immediate beneficiary is Affirm, which can now be accessed directly via Chrome’s autofill with a couple of clicks. Additionally, Google Pay has added Zip from Australia to its menu and intends to support other providers like Klarna, Afterpay, and more in the near future.

New Payment Features

Shoppers choosing to pay over time through this menu will see their options displayed before they can proceed with a virtual card generated for each specific purchase. This feature is automatically activated by merchants, requiring no additional integration efforts on their part.

Affirm’s Enhanced Presence

Affirm integrated with Google Pay early in 2024, allowing eligible consumers to pay over time using Affirm wherever the Google Pay button is present. The new options include an eligibility check followed by a choice between biweekly or monthly payment plans.

This is a strategic move for Affirm,” stated Don Apgar, Director of Merchant Payments at Javelin Strategy & Research. It highlights the importance of embedded finance in keeping payment options easily accessible to consumers.”

Innovative Payment Tools

The improvements also introduce new features to facilitate easier payments with Google. Google Wallet is adding international money transfer options, showing clear fee and exchange rate details from multiple providers before users send money abroad.

Earlier last year, Chrome’s autofill dropdown began displaying credit card reward details to assist shoppers in selecting the best payment method for each transaction. The latest update extends this feature to over 100 credit cards.
