The new Lithuanian ID cards incorporate two embedded chips—one contact and one contactless. The contact chip houses individual identification data alongside an e-signature certificate issued by the Lithuanian Residents’ Registry Service, enabling secure electronic signatures for documents such as contracts and declarations. Meanwhile, the contactless chip stores biometric information like facial images and fingerprints. Applications for these new cards commenced on January 5, 2009, with the Lithuanian Migration Office.
