After obtaining its Payment Institution (PI) licence through the Netherlands, Brex has taken a significant step towards serving high-growth businesses across major European markets.

Operational Expansion in the EU

Brex is now authorized to operate throughout the entire EU, issue commercial credit cards, and provide payment origination services, including direct debits and credit transfers. This approval enhances Brex’s ability to meet regulatory standards and local legal requirements.

With a focus on product expansion and market growth, Brex aims to secure a separate licence for UK-based customers in the near future. Prior to this development, Brex’s platform was primarily accessible to U.S.-headquartered companies. Now, more than 50% of Brex’s customer base operates across multiple countries within the EU.

Global Payments Infrastructure

Brex’s proprietary global payments infrastructure supports businesses in over 200 countries and more than 60 currencies, offering a wide range of products such as corporate cards, expense management tools, and treasury solutions to EU-based enterprises and their subsidiaries.

The PI licence facilitates Brex’s tailored services for local acceptance, reducing friction and improving payment capabilities. The onboarding process will start with selected customers through a phased rollout, with full operational readiness targeted by early 2026.

Local Presence in the Netherlands

To support its growing European customer base, Brex has established offices in the Netherlands with local teams covering sales, operations, and customer service. Currently, a dozen team members are based there, with plans to expand as Brex continues to establish itself in Europe.
