Sustainable Cards Pledge
According to a 2021 Mastercard study, nine out of ten adults in the Middle East are willing to take personal action on sustainability issues. Over 72% of respondents in the region believe that businesses should prioritize environmental efforts, with more than 25% likely to switch away from brands that do not commit to sustainable practices. Key focus areas include protecting employee health and well-being, reducing air and water pollution, and offering more durable and sustainable products.
In this context, the UAE Sustainable Cards Pledge, unveiled at COP28 in Dubai, aims to transition cards made from more sustainable materials such as recycled or bio-sourced plastics. This initiative marks a significant step forward for the UAE, positioning it as the world’s first nation to achieve this transition three years ahead of Mastercard’s global deadline of 2028. Currently, 576 issuers from 100 countries have committed to converting 449 million cards across Mastercard’s network.
Mastercard supports its issuing partners in switching from first-use PVC by connecting them with approved suppliers and offering a dedicated toolkit for card portfolio conversion. By integrating the Carbon Calculator, Ajman Bank will assist its customers in making more environmentally conscious purchasing decisions. This initiative is aligned with the bank’s commitment to reducing its ecological footprint and supporting sustainability.
